My name is Steve, and I’ve been a photographer for about five years. I started out doing street photography with a Liverpool group who helped me get to grips with my first ever DSLR, the Canon 2000. I loved learning the basics, but I quickly realised I was far more drawn to photographing people than streets or buildings.
I knew I needed to find a studio—somewhere supportive, especially around mental health, and a place where I could learn about posing, lighting, and how to express myself creatively. That proved difficult at first, until a good friend told me about a studio not too far away. She spoke highly of her experience there, especially of the person who ran it. She described him as calm, funny, and brilliant at explaining everything—from camera settings to why the lighting was set up the way it was. The model he worked with needed no direction; she’d been modelling for years. That person was Brian Sandham of Lightlove.
From my very first session, I knew Lightlove was the right place for me. I’ve continued working with them ever since and changing the camera to Canon 6D, then Canon 8D, Canon RP an now Canon R6 mII (i do like canon) and a Sony 6400.
Now, as part of Visions By Design, I want to take everything I’ve learned from Lightlove and put it into practice—both in my own work and in our group shoots. My goal is to maintain the same comfortable, friendly atmosphere the studio has always had, and to keep the same understanding and support around mental health that meant so much to me when I first started.
